The Old Malt Cask range was originally launched by Douglas Laing & Co. in 1998, and when the Laing brothers parted ways in 2013 the label followed Stewart Laing into the newly-formed Hunter Laing & Co. It has since become one of the longest-running single-cask ranges in independent Scotch whisky, distinguished by its uniform 50% bottling strength, non-chill-filtered and natural in colour.
Glen Moray is a workhorse Speyside distillery on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, founded in 1897 on the site of a former brewery. Long overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, it produces a soft, fruity style of spirit that has become a favourite for independent bottlers seeking clean, cask-driven expressions.
The nose here leans into Glen Moray's orchard-fruit signature — pear drops and lemon curd over a base of vanilla pod and toasted oak. The palate is soft and approachable, with digestive biscuit, light honey and a flicker of white pepper. The finish is medium and clean, with a gentle oak grip on the tail.
It's an unshowy single cask, but that's rather the point. Old Malt Cask has built its reputation on consistency and transparency, and this Glen Moray is a faithful example of both the range and the distillery.
