Highland Park occupies a position in Scotch whisky that few distilleries can claim. Situated on Orkney — technically an Island malt, though it carries the weight and complexity you might expect from something far older — this 15 Year Old expression, branded as Viking Heart, sits in an interesting space within their range. It bridges the gap between the widely available 12 and the more contemplative 18, and having spent time with it over several sessions, I think it makes a compelling case for itself at £89.95.

At 44% ABV, this is bottled just above the standard 43% that Highland Park uses for much of its core range. That extra percentage point is modest on paper, but it signals a willingness to let the spirit carry a little more presence in the glass. The 15 years of maturation put this firmly into territory where oak influence and spirit character should be in genuine conversation with one another, rather than one dominating the other. For a Single Malt of this age, the pricing is competitive — not cheap, but reasonable when you consider what 15-year-old expressions from comparable distilleries now command.

What to Expect

The Viking Heart name is part of Highland Park's Norse-inspired branding, which I'll admit I find a touch theatrical, but it doesn't detract from what's in the bottle. As an Island Single Malt with 15 years behind it, you should expect a whisky that carries a certain maritime influence alongside the deeper, richer notes that come with extended maturation. This is not a young, brash spirit — it's had time to settle into itself, and that shows.

The ceramic bottle is a distinctive touch and a nod to the Viking Heart moniker. It's handsome on a shelf, though I'd always rather the investment went into the liquid. In this case, I believe it has gone into both.

The Verdict

I'm giving Highland Park 15 Year Old Viking Heart a score of 7.9 out of 10. This is a whisky that knows what it is — a mid-aged Island malt with genuine character and enough maturity to reward patient drinking. It doesn't try to overreach, and it doesn't rely on gimmicks beyond the admittedly eye-catching packaging. At this price point, it represents solid value for anyone looking to explore what Highland Park does with a few extra years of cask time beyond their entry-level offerings. It's not going to rewrite anyone's understanding of Scotch whisky, but it's a genuinely enjoyable dram that I'd happily return to — and that, frankly, matters more than any amount of branding.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it sit for five minutes. A Single Malt with 15 years of age deserves the time to open up in the glass without interference. If you find it needs it, add a few drops of water — no more — to see what the lower proof reveals. This is an evening whisky, not a casual pour. Give it the attention it's earned.

Picked this up expecting to be blown away given the price tag. It's a solid single malt — dried fruit, gentle smoke, a bit of dark chocolate on the finish. But at nearly £90 I keep thinking there are other 15-year-olds that give you more for the money. I enjoy it, just wouldn't rush to rebuy.

I've been working through the Highland Park range and the 15 is where things get serious. Rich heather honey on the nose with that signature Orkney peat smoke underneath. At 44% it's got enough punch to hold up neat but never burns. Worth the jump from the 12 if you can stretch to ninety quid.
