Tasting Notes

Nose

Crisp and bright — pear, green apple, lemon peel, a drift of fresh-cut hay. Vanilla and honey sit underneath, clean and unembellished. There is a cold-water freshness about it, like air off a northern river.

Palate

Rich for its colour. Honeyed malt, baked apple, a ribbon of vanilla, then oak spice arriving with the 50% strength. A touch of dark toffee appears mid-palate, balanced by a lift of citrus pith.

Finish

Medium to long, drying gently into oak, white pepper, and a last curl of cereal sweetness. Warming and composed — a finish that earns its strength without showing off.

High Coast Distillery sits on the banks of the Angermanalven river in the Hoga Kusten — the Swedish High Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of steep cliffs and pine forest about four hours north of Stockholm. It was founded in 2010 as Box Distillery, taking its original name from the old box factory that once stood on the site, and rebranded to High Coast in 2018 as the company outgrew the Box name in international markets.

Berg is one of the distillery's core unpeated expressions, named for the mountains that rise behind the distillery. It is built around a blend of first-fill and refill American oak bourbon casks, with a portion of European oak in the mix to add spice and structure. Bottled at 50% ABV, non-chill-filtered and natural colour, it reflects the distillery's consistent commitment to presenting their spirit as transparently as possible.

What sets High Coast apart technically is their cold water source and their climate. The river water is unusually cold and soft, the maturation warehouses experience dramatic seasonal temperature swings, and the distillery runs slow, long fermentations — all choices that shape a spirit lighter and fruitier than many of its Nordic peers.

Berg is a good demonstration of the house style: bright, pear-and-honey driven, with enough oak spice to carry the higher strength without tipping into heat. It is a whisky that wears its Nordic origins quietly, trusting the clean character of the spirit to do the talking.

One of the most confidently understated single malts coming out of Sweden today.
