Heaven's Door Tennessee Bourbon is one of those bottles that tends to raise eyebrows before anyone even pops the cork — and yes, that's partly because of the Bob Dylan connection. But I've always believed a whiskey should be judged by what's in the glass, not what's on the label. So let's talk about what you're actually getting here.

This is a Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottled at 42% ABV with no age statement. The distillery behind the liquid hasn't been officially confirmed, which is worth noting — Heaven's Door sources its whiskey, and while they've since built their own facility in Bellevue, Tennessee, much of what's currently on shelves was produced elsewhere. That's not a knock. Some of the best bottles on my shelf are sourced. What matters is whether someone with a good palate selected and blended well, and in this case, I think they have.

At 42% ABV, this sits right at the lower end of what I'd want from a bourbon. It's not going to blow your hair back with intensity, but there's a trade-off: accessibility. This is a bourbon that wants to be approachable, and it succeeds at that. The Tennessee designation tells us charcoal mellowing is part of the process — the Lincoln County Process — which tends to round off some of the sharper grain edges you might find in a standard Kentucky bourbon. The result is typically a softer, slightly sweeter profile, and that's very much the lane Heaven's Door plays in.

Tasting Notes

I don't have detailed tasting notes to share on this particular bottling right now, but based on the style and category, you can expect the hallmarks of a well-made Tennessee bourbon: think gentle sweetness, vanilla and caramel from the barrel, with that characteristic smoothness that the charcoal filtering brings. At this proof, it's not going to be a flavour bomb, but it should be clean and well-balanced.

The Verdict

At £67.50, Heaven's Door Tennessee Bourbon is sitting in competitive territory. You're paying a premium — let's be honest, some of that is the branding — but you're not being ripped off either. The liquid is genuinely well put together. It's smooth without being boring, sweet without being cloying, and it has enough character to hold your attention. I'm giving this a 7.6 out of 10. It loses a point or two for the modest ABV and the fact that at this price, you could also pick up some excellent age-stated bourbons. But as a crowd-pleasing pour that looks great on a shelf and drinks easy? It delivers. If someone handed me this at a dinner party, I'd be perfectly happy.

Best Served

This bourbon was practically made for an Old Fashioned. The softer profile at 42% means it won't bulldoze through your sugar and bitters — instead it'll weave into them. Two dashes of Angostura, a barspoon of demerara syrup, a big rock of ice, and an orange peel expressed over the top. That's the move. It also drinks perfectly well neat or with a single cube if you just want to enjoy it straight. I'd avoid drowning it in a heavy cocktail though — at this proof, it'll get lost in anything too busy.
