Heaven's Door is the whisky brand co-founded by Bob Dylan in 2018, and like a lot of artist-driven spirits it arrived with skepticism attached. The Straight Bourbon has done a fair amount of work to earn its place — this is approachable Tennessee-made bourbon that takes itself seriously enough without turning stiff.

The nose is welcoming: vanilla bean, toasted grain, light caramel, a red apple sliced on a cutting board, a dusting of cinnamon and toasted almond. There's nothing sharp or solvent about it — the whole profile leans soft and inviting, the kind of nose you don't have to hunt through.

The palate follows through in the same register. Caramel corn, vanilla, honeyed wheat, orchard fruit, subtle baking spice. At 42% ABV it's on the gentler side of bourbon strength, which suits the style — this isn't trying to wrestle you, it's trying to be companionable. The texture is rounded and a little creamy, with no rough edges and no aggressive oak.

The finish is medium and gentle, warm oak and a faint dusting of cocoa fading quietly. It's a bourbon that doesn't overstay, which is its own kind of virtue.

The bottle itself — featuring one of Dylan's own welded iron gate designs — has become a collector object in its own right, but the liquid inside holds up on its own terms. This is easy-drinking bourbon with enough character to reward attention, the kind of pour that suits a long evening and a record on the turntable. Fittingly, really.
