Hakushu is the mountain heart of Suntory's whisky-making, hidden in a granite forest at the foot of the Japanese Alps in Yamanashi. Founded in 1973, the distillery sits at one of the highest elevations of any in the world, surrounded by the pure snowmelt streams of the Kai-Komagatake range. That clarity of water, and the cool forest air, gives Hakushu its unmistakable character.
The 18 Year Old is the distillery's flagship aged expression, a whisky that captures everything Hakushu does best. Where Yamazaki is incense and dark fruit, Hakushu is forest and fresh green orchard. It is one of the most distinctive single malts produced anywhere.
The nose is alive — green apple and pear skin first, then fresh pine, mint and lemon zest. As it opens, a soft thread of cool peat smoke drifts through, suggesting a campfire glimpsed between trees.
The palate continues that verdant theme. Kiwi and gooseberry, ripe melon and white pepper, herbal grass and a smouldering bonfire note that never overwhelms. The texture is clean and lively, lifted by mountain freshness.
The finish is long and cool, leaving behind smoked herbs, citrus oil and forest floor. Hakushu 18 has won World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards and remains one of the most refreshing yet complex Japanese whiskies in existence — a true expression of place.
