First Impressions
If Yamazaki is contemplative temple incense, Hakushu 12 is the morning forest. It is Japan's most botanical-tasting malt — green, fresh, faintly smoky, and unlike anything in Scotland.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded by Suntory in 1973 in the forests of the Southern Japanese Alps at the foot of Mount Kaikomagatake, Hakushu sits at over 700 metres — one of the highest distilleries in the world. Its soft granite spring water and cool mountain air give the spirit its signature crispness, while a touch of lightly peated malt brings the whisper of smoke.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is astonishingly herbal — basil, mint, fresh leaves, green apple. The palate is light and lively, with crisp orchard fruit, cucumber freshness and a delicate ribbon of bonfire smoke.
Verdict
One of the most distinctive single malts in the world. Try it as a highball with soda and a mint leaf — Japan's national serve.
