The Soleo Collection was launched by The Glenrothes in 2018 as a reframing of the distillery's age-stated core range, named for the solera seasoning process through which its casks are prepared. Every whisky in the Soleo range is matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned oak, a deliberate return to the deeply sherried character that made Glenrothes a favourite of the old blending houses.
This 15 Year Old sits in the middle of the collection, above the 12 and below the 18. The nose opens on dried fig and dark honey, with orange peel, walnut and a soft dusting of cinnamon. The sherry influence is clearly present but measured — there is no jammy excess here.
The palate delivers sticky dates, raisin, treacle toffee and baked orange, with a thread of dark chocolate running through the middle. The 43% strength gives the whisky a slightly firmer texture than the 40% bottlings in the wider Speyside field, and the fifteen years in seasoned oak have lent both depth and composure. It tastes, reassuringly, like Glenrothes — apple and vanilla woven through the sherried darkness rather than buried beneath it.
The finish is long and warming, drying gently on oak spice and dried fruit. Founded in 1879 and long considered one of Speyside's quieter craftsmen, Glenrothes in this bottling makes a clear and confident case for its own name on the label.
