The Sherry Cask Matured expression is the richest of the three Master Distiller's Reserve travel-retail bottlings created during Alan Winchester's tenure, leaning fully into European oak casks that previously held sherry. Where the standard Reserve and the Solera Vatted play to Speyside's softer, fruit-forward register, this one commits to the darker end of the spectrum.
The Glenlivet's relationship with sherry wood is long-standing — European oak has always featured in the distillery's inventory alongside the more dominant American oak — and the Sherry Cask Matured allows that character to speak with less restraint than usual. The underlying spirit is unmistakably Glenlivet, but the clothing is considerably heavier.
The nose delivers sultana, fig and dark chocolate, with a dusting of nutmeg and a faint whiff of polished furniture. The palate follows through with rich dried fruit, treacle, orange marmalade and a warming spice that builds rather than shouts. The finish is the longest of the Reserve trio, warm and oak-framed, with raisin sweetness and a touch of bitter cocoa seeing things out.
At 40% ABV it remains approachable, and some drinkers may wish for a little more cask strength to amplify the sherry character, but within its travel-retail brief it is a well-composed dram. A useful reminder that The Glenlivet's house style can stretch beyond the orchard fruit for which it is best known, and a welcome counterpoint to the lighter expressions further down the range. For the traveller with a preference for Christmas-cake flavours, this is the one to reach for at the airport.
