Tasting Notes

Nose

Pineapple, honey, baked banana, vanilla, subtle spice, perfumed oak, orchard fruits — apple, pear — white pepper, creamy malt

Palate

Spicy oak — cloves, nutmeg — fennel, raisins, nougat, cinnamon, dark cherry, roasted hazelnut, vanilla — rich and well-balanced, the French oak adding a continental note

Finish

Short to medium — light pastry, honey, cinnamon trail — pleasant but fades a touch quickly at 40%

First Impressions

Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve — matured in French Limousin oak barrels, the same wood used for Cognac and Armagnac ageing. Originally a travel retail exclusive before entering the core range. An unusual choice for Speyside, adding continental spice.

The Limousin Difference

The French Limousin oak adds a distinctive spice character — cloves, nutmeg, fennel — absent from typical ex-bourbon or ex-sherry matured Speysiders. 15 years at 40%. Part of The Glenlivet's range refresh.

Tasting

Pineapple and honey nose with baked banana and vanilla. Spicy oak palate with cloves, nutmeg, and dark cherry. The finish is pleasant but short — light pastry and honey. The French oak influence is genuine and interesting.

The Verdict

Glenlivet 15 French Oak earns a 7 — an interesting expression with genuine continental spice from the Limousin oak. At £45, fair value for a 15-year-old Speyside, though the 40% ABV limits the impact. A bridge between Scotch and Cognac traditions, if not a wholly convincing one.
