Tasting Notes

Nose

Sweet summer fragrances — banana, pineapple, meadow freshness, creamy vanilla, toffee, hints of oak, the 1824 heritage in every note

Palate

Tropical fruits — pineapple, a touch of vanilla, smooth as a fruity whisky gets, peach and pear sweetness, the double oak providing depth without weight

Finish

Oak and nutty notes — a kick on the back of the throat, lingering fruits, less smooth than the arrival but pleasantly assertive

First Impressions

George Smith obtained one of Scotland's first legal distilling licences in 1824, and The Glenlivet went on to define the Speyside style. The 12 Year Old — matured in European and American oak — is the heart of The Glenlivet's fruity character. The second best-selling single malt globally after Glenfiddich.

Tasting

The nose is tropical fruits with vanilla and toffee. On the palate at 40%, pineapple and peach with smooth vanilla. The finish is oaky and nutty with lingering fruit.

The Verdict

Glenlivet 12 earns a 7 — the single malt that started it all. George Smith's vision from 1824 remains irresistibly smooth and fruity. At £32, the original Speyside.
