First Impressions
Glenfiddich 21 Reserva — originally launched in 2002 as 'Havana Reserve,' referencing the Cuban rum casks used. The name was changed due to US trade embargo concerns around the 'Havana' branding. One of the earliest mainstream cask-finish expressions from a major Speyside distillery.
The Rum Finish
Twenty-one years in ex-bourbon casks, then finished for approximately four months in Caribbean rum barrels. The rum finish adds tropical depth to the mature Speyside base. William Grant & Sons, family-owned since 1887 when William Grant built the distillery by hand in Dufftown.
Tasting
The nose is the star — golden syrup, marmalade, dried apricots, mango. The palate is spice-forward with pepper, lime zest, and caramelized sugar, though lighter-bodied than expected. The finish is relatively short with candied ginger and toasted oak. The 40% ABV limits the depth.
The Verdict
Glenfiddich 21 earns a 7.5 — a pleasant, approachable 21-year-old with a gorgeous nose and solid rum cask influence. However, at £175 and 40%, it faces stiff competition from whiskeys with more body and complexity. The 'Havana Reserve' concept was pioneering; the execution is safe rather than spectacular.
