First Impressions
The 21 Year Old Gran Reserva has been a fixture of Glenfiddich's prestige range for years and remains one of the pioneering examples of rum-cask finishing in Scotch. After 21 years in American and European oak, the whisky is transferred into hand-selected Caribbean rum casks for approximately four months of finishing.
Distillery & Heritage
Glenfiddich was among the first major distilleries to experiment seriously with rum-cask finishing, and the 21 Gran Reserva helped popularise the technique. The rum casks are specifically chosen by Brian Kinsman for their depth of character — many come from distilleries across the Caribbean.
Tasting Notes in Detail
At 40% it's notably soft, but the concentration from 21 years of maturation carries plenty of body. The rum influence is unmissable: baked banana, brown sugar and tropical sweetness layered over mature Speyside fruit. It's a dessert whisky in the best sense.
Verdict
Luxurious, distinctive and consistently excellent. Some will wish for higher ABV, but the balance is hard to fault. A benchmark rum-finished single malt.
