First Impressions
The Age of Discovery range was Glenfiddich's tribute to the great Portuguese voyages of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries — and to the Madeira trade that followed. The 19 Year Old Madeira Cask spends most of its life in American oak before being transferred to casks that once held Madeira, the fortified wine of the eponymous Atlantic island. It is a finish, not a full maturation, and the distillery character remains in charge.
Tasting
The nose carries Glenfiddich's familiar orchard fruit and toffee, but the Madeira layer brings dried apricot, date, and a discreet nuttiness. The palate at 40% is soft and round — honeyed pear, walnut, brown sugar, and a quiet trail of cinnamon. The finish dries slowly with raisin sweetness and a clean Madeira nuttiness that never overwhelms.
The Verdict
Glenfiddich 19 Madeira earns a strong four. Travel retail exclusives are a mixed bag, but this one earns its passport. The Madeira finish suits the Glenfiddich house style — subtle, fruity, well-mannered. It will not change a sceptic's mind, but for those already at home in the Valley of the Deer, it is a quietly rewarding detour.
