First Impressions
Glenfarclas 15 — from one of Scotland's last independent family-owned distilleries. John Grant purchased the distillery in 1865, and six generations later the family still owns and operates it. 'Glenfarclas' means 'valley of the green grassland' in Gaelic. Their commitment to 100% Oloroso sherry cask maturation is absolute.
Family Tradition
Bottled at 46% because it was the preference of George Grant's grandfather — not a corporate decision but a family one. No added colour, unchillfiltered. The 15 Year Old is widely considered the sweet spot of the range: enough age for complexity, enough sherry influence for richness, enough value to drink regularly. Gold at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2022.
Tasting
Red berries, plums, and dates on the nose with creamy sherry. The palate delivers fruit-and-nut chocolate with raisins, orange peel, and warm baking spice. A minty side adds freshness. The finish is medium to long with red fruit fading into crumbly raisin fudge.
The Verdict
Glenfarclas 15 earns an 8 — one of the best-value sherried single malts available, from a family that has been doing this for 160 years. The 100% Oloroso maturation creates genuine richness, and the independent family ownership means they answer to no one but tradition. At £65, exceptional whisky.
