First Impressions
GlenDronach 12 Original — from one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries, founded 1826 by James Allardice in the East Highland village of Forgue, Aberdeenshire. GlenDronach has maintained a deep commitment to sherry cask maturation throughout its history, making it one of the few distilleries where the entire core range is matured exclusively in sherry wood.
The Sherry Tradition
Matured exclusively in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. Non-chill filtered, natural colour. Now owned by Brown-Forman via the BenRiach Distillery Company acquisition. Jim Murray scored it 92. Gold medal at the 2012 International Wine & Spirit Competition. This is sherry cask maturation done properly.
Tasting
Rich and inviting nose of demerara sugar, dark chocolate, and gingersnap biscuits. The palate is full-bodied — raspberries, cherries, raisins, chocolate, butterscotch with ginger and nutmeg spice. Creamy mouthfeel throughout. The finish brings chocolate, hazelnut, and drying oak.
The Verdict
GlenDronach 12 earns an 8 — one of the best-value fully sherried single malts available, punching well above its £38 price point. More complex than most 12-year-olds, with the Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso combination creating genuine richness. If you love sherry-matured whisky, this is essential.
