First Impressions
The GlenDronach 12 'Original' is the gateway drug to Highland sherry-bomb whisky.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded in 1826 by James Allardice in the Forgue valley near Huntly, GlenDronach is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. Mothballed in 1996 and revived in 2002, it was acquired by Billy Walker's BenRiach Distillery Company in 2008 and now sits within Brown-Forman. The house style is built on full-term maturation in Spanish oak Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose leads with raisin, fig and dark muscovado, edged by cocoa nib and orange zest. The palate is gloriously thick — stewed plums, sticky toffee pudding, walnut bread and a sprinkle of clove.
Verdict
The benchmark accessible sherried Highlander.
