Glencadam distillery sits on the eastern edge of Brechin in Angus, founded in 1825 by George Cooper. Its history has been one of repeated silences and revivals — most notably the long mothballing under Allied Distillers from 1987 until Angus Dundee Distillers purchased the site in 2003 and brought the stills back to life.
The 13 Year Old Reawakening takes its name from that restoration. It is a relatively recent addition to the core range, drawing on stocks laid down after the distillery's return to production. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and presented at natural colour, it sits as a step up from the long-serving 10 Year Old in the lineup.
Glencadam's character has long been described as the "cream of the valley of Strathmore," reflecting the soft, fruit-forward house style produced by its lantern-shaped stills set at an upward angle. The 13 Year Old shows that signature clearly: malty, gently honeyed, with an unhurried sweetness that owes much to traditional ex-bourbon maturation.
For those who appreciate quiet, classical Highland malts without peat or heavy sherry influence, the Reawakening is a thoughtful introduction to a distillery that survived neglect and emerged with its identity intact. It is a fitting bottling — both in name and substance — for a still-house that has had to earn its second life.
