GlenAllachie was built in 1967 by Charles Mackinlay and Company, designed by the prolific William Delme-Evans, and spent most of its existence as a blending component for brands such as Clan Campbell. The distillery was bought in 2017 by Billy Walker, formerly of BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh, together with Graham Stewart and Trisha Savage. Walker had inherited significant back-stock at the site, and the 8 Year Old was among the first core expressions released under the new independent ownership.
Released in 2022, the 8 Year Old reflects Walker's preferred approach of active cask management. The whisky is matured in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, with Walker personally selecting the wood, and is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colour. For a Speyside at this age, it leans distinctly into sherry influence rather than the lighter bourbon-led style common to the region.
The nose leads with dark chocolate, dried fig and walnut, followed by a thin seam of orange peel. The palate is fuller than the age suggests, carrying the raisin and cocoa weight of the PX alongside a drier Oloroso nuttiness, and there is a clear malty backbone holding everything together. The finish drifts into cinnamon and a mild tannic dryness.
At its price point the 8 Year Old is a straightforwardly good sherried Speyside, and it serves as an accessible entry to Walker's reshaping of GlenAllachie. It lacks the depth of the older releases from the distillery, but it does the job a core expression is meant to do: it shows the house style clearly and at a price that invites a second bottle.
