First Impressions
Bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered and natural colour, GlenAllachie 12 announces its intentions before you even taste it.
Distillery & Heritage
Built in 1967 to feed Mackinlay's blends, GlenAllachie spent most of its life as an unsung component malt. In 2017, Billy Walker — who had previously revived BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh — bought it from Chivas Brothers along with a vast stockpile of maturing casks. The 12 Year Old, released in 2018, was his first statement bottling, a vatting of PX, oloroso, virgin oak and Bourbon casks.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is welcoming — honeyed orange, raisin, milk chocolate, a little ginger and toffee. The palate is rounder than the colour suggests: sherried mocha, candied orange peel, butterscotch, baked apple and a warming pulse of oak spice.
Verdict
One of the best-value 12 year old single malts on the shelf.
