There are only three working distilleries in Campbeltown — a fact that never fails to stop me mid-sentence when someone asks why this tiny corner of Kintyre matters so much. Glen Scotia Double Cask is one of the more accessible ways into that conversation, and this small bottle and glass set, priced at a shade over twenty quid, makes a genuinely useful gift or a low-risk entry point for the curious.

At 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, this is a single malt bottled with enough conviction to tell you something real about what's in the glass. The double cask maturation — first-fill bourbon barrels followed by Pedro Ximénez sherry casks — gives it a profile that sits somewhere between coastal and fruity, which is about as Campbeltown as it gets. NAS releases can be polarising among enthusiasts, but I've always judged them on what's in the bottle rather than what's on the label, and this one earns its place.

Campbeltown malts carry a character you simply don't find elsewhere in Scotland. There's a maritime saltiness, a slight oiliness, and an earthiness that speaks to geography rather than marketing. Glen Scotia Double Cask leans into that identity without making it a chore. It's approachable without being bland — a balance that plenty of more expensive bottles fail to strike.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specific notes where my records don't support them, but I can tell you what to expect from the style. Double cask maturation at this strength typically delivers a core of vanilla and toffee from the bourbon wood, layered with dried fruit sweetness from the sherry finish. The Campbeltown coastal influence should thread through underneath — a briny, slightly smoky undertone that keeps things grounded. At 46%, there's enough body to carry those flavours without needing to add water, though a few drops won't do any harm.

The Verdict

At £20.75, this is remarkable value. You're getting a non-chill filtered single malt from one of Scotland's most storied — and smallest — whisky regions, presented in a gift set with a glass. For context, plenty of blended malts cost more than this and offer less character. I'd score the Glen Scotia Double Cask a 7.5 out of 10. It doesn't try to be a show-stopper, and it's all the better for it. What it does is introduce you honestly to Campbeltown's style at a price that removes any excuse not to try it. Whether you're buying it for yourself or for someone who thinks they don't like single malt, this set punches well above its weight.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and sit with it for a few minutes — let the glass warm in your hand and the coastal notes open up. If you find the 46% carries a little too much heat, add no more than a teaspoon of still water. This is also a natural fit for a Highball: 35ml over ice in a tall glass, topped with good soda water. The briny, fruity character holds up against the carbonation surprisingly well. Avoid drowning it in a cocktail — there's too much regional character here to waste.
