There are moments in this industry when you revisit a bottle and realise it has been quietly outperforming whisky twice its price. Glen Scotia 12 Year Old is one of those bottles. At 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, and carrying the unmistakable fingerprint of Campbeltown — that peculiar marriage of maritime salt and oily richness — this is a single malt that demands more attention than it typically receives.

Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of Scotland, home to over thirty distilleries at its peak. Today, only three remain. Glen Scotia is the one most people overlook, and that is a mistake. This 12 Year Old represents the distillery's core expression, and it does an admirable job of communicating what makes this region so distinct. There is a briny, slightly industrial quality to Campbeltown malts that sets them apart from the polished sweetness of Speyside or the peat-forward punch of Islay. Glen Scotia sits comfortably in that tradition — it is coastal without being aggressive, complex without being difficult.

At 46%, the bottling strength is well-chosen. It gives the whisky enough presence on the tongue to carry its weight without overwhelming, and it means you are getting something closer to the cask character than a standard 40% bottling would allow. This matters. Too many distilleries dilute their entry-level expressions into pleasant but forgettable territory. Glen Scotia has resisted that temptation here, and the whisky is better for it.

Tasting Notes

I would encourage you to approach this one with an open mind and no preconceptions. Campbeltown malts reward patience — give it ten minutes in the glass before nosing. What you can expect from this style is a distinctive interplay between fruit, salt, and a waxy, slightly oily texture that coats the mouth. The 12 years of maturation bring structure and depth without masking the distillery character beneath layers of oak. This is a whisky that tastes like somewhere specific, and that sense of place is increasingly rare.

The Verdict

At £43.95, this is extraordinary value. I say that without hesitation. You are getting a well-aged, full-strength single malt from one of Scotland's most historic and characterful regions for less than the price of many forgettable blended malts. The Glen Scotia 12 is not trying to be everything to everyone — it is unapologetically Campbeltown, and that specificity is its greatest strength. For the seasoned drinker, it offers genuine regional character and honest craft. For someone exploring beyond the usual suspects of Speyside and Highland, it is a superb entry point into what I consider Scotland's most underrated whisky region. I have scored this 8.1 out of 10 — a strong recommendation that reflects both the quality in the glass and the remarkable value for money.

Best Served

Pour it neat and leave it to open up for a few minutes. If you find the 46% carries a little heat, add no more than a teaspoon of still water — it tends to unlock some of the softer, fruitier notes hiding beneath the coastal character. This is also a whisky that works beautifully in a Highball with good soda water and a strip of lemon peel, particularly on a warm evening. But do try it neat first. Campbeltown deserves that respect.
