Glen Moray Cabernet Cask Finish Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Type: Single Malt
ABV: 40%
Price: £29.50

Glen Moray has long occupied an interesting position in the Speyside landscape — a distillery that consistently punches above its price point without demanding the spotlight. Their Cabernet Cask Finish takes the house spirit and gives it a secondary maturation in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks, a finishing technique that has become increasingly popular across the industry but one that Glen Moray handles with a lighter touch than most.

At 40% ABV and carrying no age statement, this is clearly positioned as an accessible, everyday single malt. The price point of roughly £29.50 reinforces that intention. There is nothing wrong with a whisky that knows exactly what it wants to be, and this bottling makes no pretence of being anything other than a fruit-forward, approachable Speyside dram with a wine-cask twist. I appreciate that honesty.

What to Expect

The Cabernet cask influence here is the defining characteristic. Where some wine-finished whiskies can feel heavy-handed — the cask overwhelming the spirit — Glen Moray's relatively gentle house style tends to absorb secondary maturation well. You should expect the classic Speyside backbone of orchard fruit and cereal sweetness, layered with the darker berry and tannic qualities that Cabernet Sauvignon barrels impart. The result, broadly speaking, sits in that space between a traditional Speyside and something closer to a sherried style, though without the depth or weight that a long sherry maturation would provide.

The 40% bottling strength is the one area where I find myself wanting more. It is the legal minimum for Scotch whisky, and while it keeps the spirit smooth and easy-drinking, a bump to 43% or 46% would likely give the wine-cask character more room to express itself. That said, at this price, it is difficult to be too critical. You are getting a genuine single malt with an interesting cask programme for less than thirty pounds — that represents solid value.

The Verdict

I have a genuine soft spot for whiskies that deliver quality without pretension, and the Glen Moray Cabernet Cask Finish does exactly that. It is not going to rewrite your understanding of Speyside single malt, nor is it trying to. What it offers is a well-made, fruit-driven whisky with enough character from the wine-cask finishing to distinguish it from the standard range, at a price that makes it an easy purchase for both newcomers and experienced drinkers looking for a reliable weeknight pour.

At 7.7 out of 10, this earns a comfortable recommendation. The wine-cask influence adds genuine interest without masking the spirit's identity, and the value proposition is strong. If Glen Moray were to release this at a higher strength, I suspect it would score even better — but as it stands, this is a well-judged, well-priced single malt that does its job with quiet confidence.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it sit in the glass for a few minutes — the wine-cask character opens up nicely with a little air. A small splash of water is perfectly fine here and may actually help at 40%, softening the spirit just enough to let the fruit notes come forward. This also works surprisingly well as a Highball with quality soda water; the berry-tinged sweetness pairs naturally with the effervescence and makes for a very drinkable long serve on warmer evenings. Avoid heavy mixers — they will bury what makes this bottling distinctive.
