Glen Moray sits on the western edge of Elgin, on the banks of the River Lossie, and has been quietly producing Speyside malt since 1897. Under the long stewardship of master distiller Graham Coull and now Iain Allan, the distillery built an early reputation for cask-finishing experiments — chenin blanc, chardonnay, port and rum pipes have all been put to use, sometimes well ahead of fashion. The 21 Year Old Portwood is a more contemplative example of that house tradition.

The whisky spends the bulk of its life in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred to ruby port pipes for an extended finish. It is bottled at 46.3% ABV, a step above the entry-level strength and well chosen for the weight of fruit the port has contributed.

The nose opens on stewed plum and raspberry jam, with milk chocolate and vanilla beneath and a faint floral lift — the rose-like note that good port finishes can bring. The palate is round and gently sweet, a red berry compote carried by honey and almond, with warm cinnamon picking up at the back. The bourbon-cask base gives the whole thing a settled, vanilla-edged structure that the port enriches rather than overwhelms.

The finish is long and softly drying, returning red fruit fading into a polished oak close. Glen Moray's older expressions are sometimes overlooked alongside the bigger Speyside names, but the 21 Year Old Portwood is a quietly luxurious dram and a fine demonstration of what patient cask work can do at this price.
