First Impressions
Glen Grant 12 — Italy's favourite Scotch. Importer Armando Giovinetti brought it to Italy in 1961, and by the early 1970s Glen Grant was the country's No.1 selling Scotch. Gruppo Campari purchased the distillery in 2006 largely because of this Italian connection.
The Grant Brothers
Founded 1840 by brothers John and James Grant — former illegal distillers who went legit. The distillery's tall slender stills and purifiers, introduced by 'The Major' (James Grant Jr.), create the signature fresh, clear, light character that made it so popular in Italy.
Tasting
Honey and sugared almond nose with orchard fruit. Sweet red apple palate with golden barley and vanilla. Clean almond finish with gentle warmth. Fresh, clear, and light — exactly the character Italy fell in love with.
The Verdict
Glen Grant 12 earns a 7 — a solid, approachable Speyside that conquered Italy before the rest of the world noticed. At £38, good value. Not complex, but excellent for newcomers and a reminder that the world's favourite whiskies aren't always the ones enthusiasts obsess over.
