First Impressions
Glen Garioch 12 (pronounced 'Glen Geery') is one of those whiskies that hides in plain sight — a bottle the regulars know is punching above its price. At a generous 48% ABV, non-chill-filtered, it doesn't waste any time getting to the point.
Distillery & Heritage
Glen Garioch sits in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, in the fertile lowland known as the Garioch — once called the granary of Aberdeenshire. Founded in 1797, it's one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland still operating. Owned today by Beam Suntory, it produces an unpeated, robust Highland style with thick, cereal-rich character. The 12 year old, introduced in 2021 at 48%, replaced the previous 1797 Founder's Reserve and gave the core range a real upgrade.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose opens with heather honey and baked apple, cinnamon, toasted oak, and that distinctive Glen Garioch cereal sweetness. The palate is chunky and confident — dried fruit from the sherry casks, malted bread, ginger, dark honey and nutmeg. The 48% strength keeps everything bright and lively. The finish is medium-long, warming, with spice and a touch of oak tannin.
Verdict
One of the best value 12 year old single malts on the shelf right now. Glen Garioch flies under the radar but rewards anyone who picks the bottle up. A proper Highland malt for grown-ups.
