First Impressions
Four Roses Yellow Label is the gateway to one of Kentucky's most distinctive bourbon houses. Where most distilleries work with one or two mashbills, Four Roses famously blends all ten of its proprietary recipes — the product of two mashbills crossed with five proprietary yeast strains — into this single expression.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded by Paul Jones Jr. in 1888 and now owned by Kirin, the Lawrenceburg distillery sits in a striking Spanish Mission-style building on the banks of the Salt River. Master Distiller Brent Elliott oversees the ten-recipe system that gives Four Roses its signature complexity. Yellow Label, relaunched in the US in 2002 after decades as an export-only brand, is the flagship of the range.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is gentle and inviting — ripe pear, clover honey and a delicate floral lift that hints at the yeast-driven character. The palate is soft and fruity, with red apple, light caramel and just enough high-rye spice from the E mashbill recipes to keep things lively. The finish is clean and mellow, making this a textbook easy-drinking Kentucky bourbon.
Verdict
For under thirty pounds, Yellow Label is one of the best introductions to bourbon on the shelf.
