Eden Mill Bourbon Cask Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

There is something quietly compelling about a Lowland single malt that doesn't try to shout over the room. The Eden Mill Bourbon Cask arrives at a confident 46% ABV, non-chill filtered by all indications at that strength, and positions itself squarely in the lighter, more approachable end of the Scottish single malt spectrum. At £54.75, it sits in a competitive bracket — and I think it earns its place there.

The Lowlands have long been Scotland's most underestimated whisky region. While Islay gets the headlines and Speyside fills the shelves, the Lowlands have historically produced spirits of genuine elegance — lighter in body, often floral or grassy, with a refinement that rewards patience rather than demanding attention. This bottling from Eden Mill leans into that tradition rather than fighting against it, and I respect that decision.

Bourbon cask maturation is the right call for a whisky of this character. American oak tends to bring vanilla sweetness, a touch of coconut, and a gentle spice that complements rather than overwhelms a lighter spirit. For a NAS release, the choice of cask is doing much of the heavy lifting in terms of complexity, and bourbon wood is forgiving enough to let the distillery character come through. At 46%, you're getting this without the muting effect of heavy dilution — there's enough strength here to carry flavour without the need to add water, though a few drops certainly won't hurt.

Tasting Notes

I would encourage you to approach this one with an open mind. Lowland malts matured in bourbon casks tend toward honey, cereal sweetness, and orchard fruit, often with a clean, slightly malty backbone. Without confirmed tasting notes from the distillery, I'll say this: expect something approachable, gently sweet, and well-suited to those evenings where you want a dram that doesn't demand a thesis to enjoy. It is a whisky that invites you in rather than challenging you at the door.

The Verdict

I'm giving the Eden Mill Bourbon Cask a 7.8 out of 10. This is a solid, well-constructed Lowland single malt that does exactly what it sets out to do. It won't rewrite your understanding of Scotch whisky, and it doesn't need to. What it offers is genuine quality at a fair price point — a clean, bourbon-cask-driven single malt bottled at a strength that shows confidence in the liquid. In a market increasingly cluttered with NAS releases that feel thin or overly reliant on wood influence, this one strikes a sensible balance. It's the kind of bottle I'd keep on the shelf for guests who say they don't like Scotch — give them this, and watch them reconsider.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes to open up. If you find the 46% carries a little too much heat for your preference, a small splash of water — no more than a teaspoon — will soften things nicely without flattening the character. This would also make a very respectable Highball with quality soda water and a twist of lemon peel: the Lowland lightness and bourbon-cask sweetness are tailor-made for that style of serve. On a warm afternoon, I'd reach for this before most Speysides in the same format.
