The Dalmore 18 is where the distillery's elaborate cask programme truly comes into its own. The extra three years beyond the 15 Year Old are spent in Matusalem oloroso sherry casks — 30-year-old González Byass casks that have become synonymous with the Dalmore house style. At eighteen years, the spirit has had time to absorb the sherry influence deeply, producing a whisky of considerable richness.
Bottled at 43% — a step up from the 12's 40%, though still below what enthusiasts would prefer — the 18 represents the Dalmore at its most composed. The bourbon and sherry influences have had time to integrate fully, producing a more balanced, more nuanced whisky than the younger expressions.
The nose is luxurious: orange marmalade, dark chocolate, Christmas cake, dried fig, and old leather, with the sherry influence unmistakable but refined. The palate is full and velvety — dark fruit, toffee, espresso, clove, and a rich maltiness beneath the sherry sweetness.
The finish is long, with oak, dried fruit, and a gentle warmth. The Dalmore 18 is the expression that converts sceptics — the one where the elaborate cask programme stops being marketing and starts being genuinely compelling whisky.
