Tasting Notes

Nose

Tropical fruit, mango, honeydew melon, maritime brine, seaweed, floral honey, iodine, vanilla, earthy peat, apricot, sweet lemon — the Moscatel adding brightness

Palate

Rounder than standard Caol Ila — caramel, lemon candy, pear, sweet oak, then ash, smoke, pepper, bread crust, milk chocolate

Finish

Bitter tea, liquorice, grapefruit zest — earthy and slightly dry, the Moscatel finish subtle but effective

First Impressions

Caol Ila Distillers Edition — from Islay's largest distillery, founded 1846 by Hector Henderson. 'Caol Ila' is Gaelic for 'Sound of Islay.' Roughly 85-95% of output goes into blends — most notably Johnnie Walker Black Label. The original distillery was demolished in 1972 and rebuilt larger in 1974.

The Moscatel Touch

While most Distillers Editions use Oloroso or PX sherry, Caol Ila uses Moscatel — a sweet Spanish dessert wine. The Moscatel adds creamy sweetness that complements the signature smoke. A safe but effective departure from the core 12 Year Old. 43%.

Tasting

Tropical fruit and mango nose with brine and seaweed. Rounder palate than standard Caol Ila — caramel, pear, sweet oak, then ash and smoke. Slightly dry finish with bitter tea and grapefruit. The Moscatel is subtle but effective.

The Verdict

Caol Ila Distillers Edition earns a 7.5 — a worthy annual release from Islay's workhorse distillery. At £60, a meaningful upgrade over the standard 12. The Moscatel finish adds creamy sweetness without masking the smoke. JW's secret ingredient, briefly visible.
