Bw6 - Elements of Islay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

8.2 /10

Type: Single Malt
ABV: 55.2%
Price: £175.00

The Elements of Islay series has long been one of the more intriguing projects in independent Scotch bottling. Each release is identified by a cryptic letter code rather than a named distillery — a deliberate move by Elixir Distillers that shifts your attention from brand loyalty to what's actually in the glass. Bw6 is the sixth bottling under the Bw designation, and while the distillery source remains officially unconfirmed, the liquid speaks with unmistakable Islay character.

At 55.2% ABV and bottled without an age statement, this is a whisky that leans into intensity rather than pedigree. NAS releases sometimes invite scepticism, but in the context of Elements of Islay — where the entire proposition is about cask selection and blending skill rather than a number on the label — it feels entirely appropriate. What matters here is whether the bottlers have found something worth £175, and I think they have.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics where my notes don't warrant it, but I can speak to the broader profile. This is unmistakably Islay: a single malt bottled at cask strength that carries the weight and presence you'd expect from the island's tradition. At 55.2%, there's real substance here — the kind of ABV that rewards patience. Give it ten minutes in the glass before you form any opinions. The cask-strength bottling means you're getting the whisky as the bottlers intended, without dilution smoothing away the edges or the detail. That's a good thing.

The Verdict

Bw6 sits in a competitive space. At £175, you're paying a premium over entry-level Islay malts, and the lack of a confirmed distillery or age statement means you're placing trust in Elixir Distillers' palate. Having followed this series across multiple releases, I think that trust is well placed. The Elements range has a strong track record of showcasing Islay character with a clarity that distillery own-bottlings don't always achieve — stripped of marketing narrative and left to stand on flavour alone.

The cask-strength presentation is a genuine asset. Too many bottlings in this price bracket are diluted to 46% and dressed up with packaging. Here, you get the full experience, and the option to add water on your own terms. For anyone who takes their Islay whisky seriously, that matters.

I'm scoring Bw6 at 8.2 out of 10. It's a confident, well-selected cask-strength Islay malt from a bottler with a proven eye for quality. It doesn't need a famous name on the label to justify itself — the liquid does that work. It's not the cheapest way onto the island, but it's one of the more honest ones.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with time. Pour it and leave it for at least ten minutes — cask-strength Islay at 55.2% needs air to open properly. After you've taken it neat, add a few drops of water and taste again. The shift in character at this ABV can be remarkable, and finding your preferred dilution is half the pleasure. A classic Islay Highball with good soda water works on a warm evening, but this bottle deserves to be explored slowly before you start mixing with it.
