First Impressions
Bushmills Black Bush — from the world's oldest registered distillery licence, granted 1608 in County Antrim. The 'Black Bush' name refers to the dark, rich character from generous Oloroso sherry cask maturation. An unusually malt-rich blend — up to 80% triple-distilled malt whiskey.
The Sherry Factor
The high malt proportion and predominantly Oloroso sherry cask maturation set Black Bush apart from typical Irish blends. Where most blends use 20-30% malt, Black Bush uses up to 80%. The result is closer to a single malt than a blend in character. 40% ABV.
Tasting
Rich dried fruit nose with raisins and mandarin orange. Warm spiced palate with caramelised sugar, marzipan, and apricot. The finish is pleasantly lingering with full-bodied sherry warmth. Impressive depth for the price.
The Verdict
Bushmills Black Bush earns a 7 — one of the best-value sherry-influenced whiskeys at any price point. At £26 with 80% malt and Oloroso sherry maturation, nothing else comes close for the money. A solid, dependable dram that punches well above its weight. The dark side of 1608.
