Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich dark fruits — prune, fig, raisin, plum — polished oak, honey-drizzled nuts, toffee, baking spice — the sherry depth is immediate

Palate

Dense sherried richness lifted by coastal saltiness — roast chestnuts, gentle wood spice, a distinctive maritime 'distillery funk,' oily full-bodied mouthfeel

Finish

Long and warming — mint, rosemary, basil herbaceousness giving way to sherry vinegar, sea salt, lingering sweetness — one of Islay's finest finishes

First Impressions

Bunnahabhain 18 — Islay's gentlest giant. Founded 1881, the name means 'mouth of the river' in Gaelic. Always the outlier on Islay: largely unpeated, drawing soft water from the Margadale spring rather than peat-heavy sources.

Maritime Sherry

The maritime character comes not from peat smoke but from 18 years ageing in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks in coastal warehouses on the Sound of Islay. Non-chill filtered, natural colour, 46.3%. Batch variation is notable — some lean savoury, others sweeter — but all deliver remarkable complexity.

Tasting

Rich dark fruit nose with polished oak and honey-drizzled nuts. Dense sherried palate lifted by coastal saltiness with roast chestnuts and distinctive maritime character. Long, warming finish with herbal notes giving way to sea salt and lingering sweetness.

The Verdict

Bunnahabhain 18 earns an 8.5 — one of the best value aged single malts available. At £110, the combination of 18 years, Oloroso sherry, and maritime Islay character is exceptional. Proof that Islay isn't just about peat. The gentle giant of the island.
