First Impressions
Bowmore 18 — from Islay's oldest distillery, established 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal. Uses floor maltings. Its legendary No. 1 Vaults — the oldest Scotch maturation warehouse, partially below sea level — contribute to the maritime character.
Refined Islay
Matured in ex-bourbon barrels and sherry casks. Replaced the 17 Year Old in 2007. The dual-cask maturation gives it a mellow, perfumed quality. More refined and approachable than younger Bowmore expressions while retaining enough peat. 43%.
Tasting
Soft peat and polished leather nose with toffee and candied orange. Melon and fruit palate with gentle peat and white pepper. Long, warm finish with smoke, tar, and brine. Civilised and balanced.
The Verdict
Bowmore 18 earns a 7.5 — a refined, balanced Islay dram from the island's oldest distillery. At £82, fair for 18 years of maturation in the No. 1 Vaults. Some find it could deliver more complexity for the price, but the elegance is genuine. Islay at its most civilised.
