Bn8 - Elements of Islay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

7.7 /10
EDITOR
Type: Single Malt
ABV: 58.4%
Price: £120.00

The Elements of Islay series has long been one of the more intriguing independent bottling projects in Scotch whisky. Curated by Elixir Distillers, each release strips away the usual marketing gloss and lets the liquid do the talking — identified only by a cryptic code and a striking label. Bn8 is the eighth release under the 'Bn' designation, and while the distillery is never officially confirmed, the coding system has become something of an open secret among enthusiasts. What matters here is what's in the glass, and at 58.4% ABV with no age statement, this is a whisky that arrives with serious intent.

At £120, Bn8 sits in competitive territory for an independent Islay single malt at cask strength. There's no age statement to lean on, which means Elixir Distillers are asking you to trust their blending and selection — a fair ask, given their track record. The decision to bottle at natural strength without chill-filtration is one I always respect. It signals confidence in the cask selection and a willingness to present the whisky without compromise. For those unfamiliar with the series, each 'element' is a vatting of casks from a single distillery, chosen to represent a particular character or mood rather than a specific vintage.

What you should expect from Bn8 is an Islay single malt that leans into its coastal origins. The cask strength presentation means this is a whisky that rewards patience — a few drops of water will open it up considerably, and I'd encourage you to spend time with it before forming any firm judgements. The NAS approach gives the blenders freedom to combine casks of different ages for complexity rather than chasing a number on a label, and in the Elements series that freedom has generally been used well.

Tasting Notes

I'll be returning to update this section with full tasting notes in due course. For now, I'll say that Bn8 at this strength demands attention — it is not a whisky that fades into the background of an evening. The intensity is immediately apparent, and there is genuine depth here that suggests careful cask management.

The Verdict

Bn8 earns a strong 7.7 out of 10 from me. This is a well-constructed cask strength Islay single malt from a series that has built its reputation on quality and consistency. The price point is fair for what you're getting — an uncompromised, natural strength bottling from one of Scotland's most celebrated whisky regions, selected by a team with genuine expertise. It doesn't quite reach the heights of the very best Elements releases I've tasted over the years, but it delivers exactly what it promises: honest, full-throttle Islay character without pretension. For collectors of the series, it's an obvious purchase. For newcomers, it's a worthy introduction to what independent bottling can offer when done with care.

Best Served

Pour it neat first and sit with it for five minutes — let the alcohol integrate and the whisky breathe. Then add a small splash of cool water, perhaps half a teaspoon at a time. At 58.4%, the transformation with water is part of the experience. A classic approach for a cask strength Islay: no ice, no mixers, just you and the glass. A Glencairn or copita will serve you well here.
