Bn2 - Elements of Islay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

8 /10
EDITOR
Type: Single Malt
ABV: 56.1%
Price: £150.00

The Elements of Islay series from Speciality Drinks has long been one of the more intriguing projects in independent Scotch bottling. Each release is identified by a cryptic letter code rather than a named distillery, and the packaging — stark, minimalist, almost laboratory-like — strips away the marketing noise that clutters so much of the whisky shelf. Bn2 is the second release under the Bn designation, an Islay single malt bottled at a commanding 56.1% ABV with no age statement. At £150, it sits in that increasingly competitive space where serious Islay malt meets serious expectation.

What I appreciate about the Elements of Islay range is its refusal to hand you the answers. The Bn code will send enthusiasts reaching for their decoder rings — the series uses letter abbreviations that correspond to specific Islay distilleries, though the label never confirms outright. That deliberate ambiguity forces you to engage with the liquid itself rather than lean on brand loyalty or distillery reputation. It is whisky that asks to be judged on its own terms, and I respect that enormously.

At 56.1%, this is bottled at natural cask strength with no chill filtration — a decision that preserves texture and character in a way that lower-strength, filtered releases simply cannot match. For an Islay single malt at this strength, you should expect weight. Real, physical weight on the palate. NAS releases in this category often draw from a mix of cask ages to achieve a particular flavour profile rather than chasing a number on the label, and when done well — as it is here — the result can be more expressive than many age-stated bottlings at twice the price.

Tasting Notes

I would encourage anyone approaching Bn2 to spend real time with this whisky before forming a judgement. At cask strength, it evolves considerably in the glass over twenty minutes, and a few drops of water will open it further still. This is not a dram that reveals everything on first nosing — it rewards patience, which is exactly what good Islay malt should do.

The Verdict

Bn2 delivers what the Elements of Islay series promises: honest, uncompromised Islay single malt, presented without artifice. The cask-strength bottling is the right call — it gives the drinker control over their experience rather than making that decision for them. At £150, it is not an impulse purchase, but it is fairly positioned within the current landscape of independent Islay bottlings at natural strength. The quality of the spirit justifies the asking price, and for collectors of the Elements series, this second Bn release is a worthy addition. I would rate Bn2 at 8 out of 10 — a confident, well-executed bottling that does its unnamed source proud.

Best Served

Pour neat into a Glencairn and give it a full five minutes before nosing. Then add water — literally three or four drops at a time — and watch it open up. At 56.1%, this whisky can handle dilution without falling apart, and finding your preferred strength is half the pleasure. A classic Islay Highball with chilled soda water would not be out of place on a warm evening, but I would suggest you get to know Bn2 neat first. It has earned that much attention.
