First Impressions
Vinaya is the most approachable face of the new Bladnoch — a soft, sweet, sherry-and-bourbon Lowlander aimed squarely at newcomers to the region.
Distillery and Heritage
Launched in 2020 as part of master distiller Dr Nick Savage's rework of the Bladnoch range, Vinaya takes its name from a Sanskrit word meaning humility or modesty — a nod, the distillery says, to those who came before. It is a vatting of first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-sherry casks, bottled at Bladnoch's house strength of 46.7% ABV and non-chill-filtered.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The NAS format allows the blender to build for character rather than age. The sherry influence is generous without tipping into the oloroso-heavy style of some sherried malts, and the bourbon component keeps the fruit bright. It drinks a little younger than the 11 Year Old, as one would expect, but with more immediate sweetness and a rounder shape on the palate.
Bladnoch positions Vinaya as the gateway of the core range, sitting below the 11, 14 and 17 Year Old expressions in both price and profile. The use of first-fill casks on both sides of the vatting is notable at this price point, and accounts for the deeper colour and more assertive cask character than is common among entry-level Lowlanders.
Verdict
A friendly, well-constructed introduction to Lowland whisky. Good value for a non-chill-filtered malt at this strength, and a sensible starting point for anyone working their way into the rebuilt Bladnoch stable before tackling the older aged expressions further up the range.
