Tasting Notes

Nose

Clean malt, honey, a gentle vanilla sweetness. The organic barley gives the nose a pure, cereal freshness. Beneath the malt, green apple, a touch of citrus and a gentle warmth. Clean and unadorned.

Palate

Clean and malty — barley, honey, a gentle oak sweetness. The organic production is reflected in the spirit's purity and clarity. A touch of spice and a gentle warmth mid-palate. Well-made and honest, if not complex.

Finish

Medium, clean, with barley and a gentle warmth.

Benromach Contrasts: Organic is Scotland's first certified organic single malt whisky. Every stage of production meets Soil Association organic standards — from the barley, grown without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, to the yeast, to the maturation in virgin oak casks (since used casks from non-organic spirits would breach the certification). The result is a whisky that is both a statement of environmental principle and a genuinely interesting exploration of how organic ingredients affect spirit character.

The organic barley gives the spirit a notable purity and freshness. Whether this is genuinely the effect of organic cultivation or simply the placebo of knowing the provenance, the whisky has a clean, cereal-forward character that is appealing in its simplicity. The virgin oak maturation — necessitated by the organic certification — adds vanilla and gentle spice without the influence of previous cask contents.

Benromach Organic is an important whisky — less for what it tastes like than for what it represents. The commitment to organic certification at every stage of production is rigorous and costly, and Benromach's willingness to pursue it demonstrates that sustainability and quality are not mutually exclusive. The whisky itself is well-made, clean and pleasant. For environmentally conscious drinkers, it is essential. For everyone, it is an interesting experiment in provenance and purity.
