Basil Hayden is one of those bourbons that divides opinion, and I think that's partly what makes it interesting. Sitting within the Jim Beam Small Batch Collection — alongside Knob Creek, Baker's, and Booker's — it's deliberately positioned as the lighter, more approachable entry point. At 40% ABV, it's the lowest proof of the four, and that's a deliberate choice that shapes everything about this whiskey.

What sets Basil Hayden apart from most bourbons on the shelf is its high-rye mashbill. While the standard bourbon mashbill might run around 10-15% rye, Basil Hayden pushes that considerably higher. And if you understand what rye does in a bourbon — it brings spice, dryness, and a certain crispness that corn-heavy recipes simply don't deliver — then you already have a good idea of the character here. It's a bourbon that leans into peppery, herbal territory rather than the thick, sweet caramel you might expect from the category.

The 40% ABV is worth talking about honestly. Some bourbon drinkers will see that number and move on, and I understand the instinct. But here's the thing: not every bourbon needs to knock you sideways. There's a place for restraint, and Basil Hayden occupies it well. The lower proof makes it genuinely easy to drink neat without any water, which is something I appreciate when I'm reaching for a weeknight pour rather than a weekend occasion bottle.

Tasting Notes

I don't have detailed tasting notes to share on this one, but based on the high-rye profile and lighter body, you should expect something drier and spicier than your typical bourbon. Think rye bread, black pepper, and a clean, relatively short finish rather than the rich, dessert-like sweetness of a wheated bourbon. It's more about subtlety than power.

The Verdict

At around £48, Basil Hayden sits in a competitive space. You're paying partly for the presentation — that distinctive tall bottle with the paper band is one of the most recognisable packages on any back bar — and partly for a genuinely different bourbon experience. Is it the best value per pound? Probably not. But it does something that many bourbons at this price don't even attempt: it shows restraint. The high-rye mashbill gives it a personality that's distinct from the crowd, and the lower proof makes it one of the most sessionable straight bourbons you'll find. I'm giving it a 7.9 out of 10. It's not trying to be the biggest or boldest bourbon on the shelf, and I respect that. It knows exactly what it is — a clean, spice-forward, easy-drinking bourbon that works brilliantly as a daily sipper or as a gateway for someone moving from lighter spirits into American whiskey.

Best Served

This is a natural Old Fashioned bourbon. That high-rye spice plays beautifully with a sugar cube, a couple of dashes of Angostura, and an orange peel — you don't need the bitters to do all the heavy lifting because the whiskey already brings its own complexity. If you prefer it neat, don't bother adding water; at 40% it's already right where it needs to be. On a warm evening, it also works surprisingly well over a single large ice cube — the slight dilution opens up the lighter aromatics without drowning anything out.
