Independent bottlings are where the real discoveries happen. The big distillery releases have their place — consistent, reliable, often polished to a fault — but hand me a well-chosen single cask or small batch from an independent bottler, and I'm paying closer attention. This Aultmore 2011, selected by Single Malts of Scotland for their Small Batch series, is exactly that kind of bottle: a quiet Speyside distillery given room to speak through someone else's curation.

Aultmore has never been a household name, even among serious whisky drinkers. Tucked away near Keith in the heart of Speyside, it has long supplied malt for blending houses, with only a modest official range to its name. That relative obscurity works in its favour here. There's no marketing machine shaping expectations — just twelve years in oak and a bottling strength of 48%, which tells me the bottler wanted to preserve character rather than dilute it down to an easy-drinking 40%. That decision alone earns my respect.

At twelve years old and bottled as a small batch, this sits in a sweet spot for Speyside single malt. You're past the raw cereal bite of youth but not yet into the heavy oak influence that can overwhelm more delicate distillery styles. Aultmore has historically produced a clean, somewhat waxy spirit — often described as having an almost grassy freshness — and a twelve-year maturation should allow that house character to come through while adding enough depth and complexity to reward a slow pour.

The 48% ABV is worth noting. It's not cask strength, but it's meaningfully above the standard 40-43% you'll find on most supermarket shelves. That extra strength carries more flavour compounds to the glass and gives the whisky a fuller mouthfeel. For those unfamiliar with higher-strength bottlings, this is an approachable entry point — robust enough to hold its own with a splash of water, but not so fierce that it overwhelms.

The Verdict

At £60.50, this Aultmore 2011 sits in competitive territory. You're paying a modest premium over entry-level Speyside malts, but what you get in return is a bottling with genuine provenance — a specific vintage, a small batch selection, and a strength that prioritises flavour over volume. Single Malts of Scotland have built a solid reputation for careful cask selection, and this release feels like a considered choice rather than a bulk purchase.

I'd rate this an 8 out of 10. It delivers exactly what a well-priced independent Speyside bottling should: character, integrity, and enough individuality to make you want a second glass. It won't rewrite your understanding of whisky, but it doesn't need to. This is honest, well-made single malt from a distillery that deserves far more attention than it gets. If you're building out your collection beyond the usual suspects, Aultmore belongs on the shelf.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it open up in the glass for five minutes — Aultmore rewards patience. If you prefer, add a small splash of room-temperature water to bring the ABV down slightly and unlock any subtler aromatics. This is a whisky built for quiet contemplation, not cocktails. A proper Glencairn glass and an unhurried evening are all the accompaniment it needs.
