Tasting Notes

Nose

Toasted almonds, crème brûlée, vanilla, green apple, a whisper of ginger.

Palate

Smooth and light-bodied — caramel, citrus zest, hazelnut, honeyed cereal, hints of tangerine.

Finish

Medium, gently spiced, with lingering nuttiness and dried fruit.

First Impressions

Auchentoshan 12 is the entry point into one of Scotland's most distinctive malt houses — the only distillery in the country to triple-distil every drop.

Distillery & Heritage

Sitting just outside Glasgow at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills, Auchentoshan was founded in 1823 and has long been a Lowland standard-bearer. The triple distillation pushes the new make to around 81% ABV, yielding a famously clean, gentle distillate. The 12 is matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose is delicate but generous: toasted almond and crème brûlée first, then a brush of green apple and orange peel. The palate is silky and unmistakably Lowland — light-bodied, lifted by citrus and honey, deepened by hazelnut and a touch of dark chocolate.

Verdict

An unfussy, easygoing Lowlander.
