First Impressions
anCnoc 12 — produced at Knockdhu Distillery, established 1894 in Knock, Aberdeenshire. Renamed 'anCnoc' (Gaelic for 'the hill') in 1993 to avoid confusion with Knockando. Built by John Morrison after a natural spring was discovered during excavations.
The Rebranding
Knockdhu operated quietly for decades, supplying blends. The anCnoc rebranding established a distinct single malt identity. Unpeated, matured in ex-bourbon and Spanish oak casks. Non-chill filtered in recent bottlings. At approximately £32, excellent value for a 12-year-old Highland malt.
Tasting
Creamy and bright nose with honey, vanilla, and lemon zest. Lighter-bodied, malt-forward palate with green lemon, butter, and biscuit. The finish is medium with citrus and ginger spice. Zesty, approachable, and crowd-pleasing.
The Verdict
anCnoc 12 earns a 7 — a quality entry-level Highland malt at a very fair price. It won't challenge complex Speysiders, but the balance and drinkability are excellent. One of those quiet distilleries that deserves more recognition. The hill of Knockdhu, waiting to be discovered.
