There was a time, not so long ago, when the suggestion of Indian single malt whisky would have drawn polite scepticism from even the most open-minded drinkers. That time has passed. Amrut, based in Bangalore, has done more than any other distillery on the subcontinent to shift perceptions, and their Peated Cask Strength expression is perhaps the most forceful argument in their catalogue.

At 62.8% ABV, this is not a whisky that asks for your attention — it demands it. The cask strength bottling strips away any compromise. What arrives in the glass is unfiltered, undiluted, and entirely unapologetic. For those unfamiliar with the Amrut approach, the tropical climate of southern India accelerates maturation dramatically compared to the cool warehouses of Scotland. The angel's share in Bangalore can reach eight to ten per cent per year, meaning what remains in the cask is concentrated and intense in ways that a similarly aged Scottish spirit simply cannot replicate. This goes some way toward explaining why Amrut opts for no age statement on this bottling — the numbers would look modest on paper, but the liquid tells a far more developed story.

The peating here deserves discussion. Amrut sources peated barley from Scotland, and the resulting spirit carries that smoke character into an entirely different maturation environment. The combination is distinctive: peat influence shaped by subtropical heat rather than Atlantic damp. It creates a profile that sits apart from Islay or Highland peated malts, occupying its own ground with confidence.

Tasting Notes

I would encourage any drinker approaching this bottle to take their time. At this strength, a few drops of water are not just acceptable — they are essential to unlocking the full character. The cask strength delivery means the whisky will evolve considerably in the glass over fifteen to twenty minutes, and patience rewards handsomely here.

The Verdict

At £79.75, the Amrut Peated Cask Strength sits in a competitive bracket. You could spend similar money on a well-regarded Islay ten-year-old or a respectable Highland single malt. What this bottle offers is something those cannot: genuine novelty without gimmickry. This is a serious whisky made with obvious technical skill, and the cask strength bottling ensures nothing has been lost between barrel and bottle.

I score this 7.9 out of 10. It is a genuinely impressive spirit that rewards the curious drinker, and it represents excellent value when you consider the intensity and concentration that cask strength delivery provides. My only reservation is that the NAS approach, while entirely justified by the maturation conditions, still asks the buyer to trust the producer rather than the label — and not everyone is ready to make that leap. Those who do will not be disappointed.

Best Served

Neat, with water added gradually — start with three or four drops and build from there. At 62.8%, this whisky needs room to breathe and dilution to open fully. A heavy-based tumbler works well. I would avoid ice entirely; the cold will clamp down on the very qualities that make this bottling worth seeking out. If you are feeling adventurous, a Japanese-style Highball with quality soda water and a single large ice cube makes a surprisingly effective serve — the peat carries beautifully through the carbonation.
