First Impressions
Amrut Peated Cask Strength pours a deep amber and announces itself with a thick curtain of smoke on the nose. At nearly 63%, it's unapologetic — but the Indian climate has rounded the edges beautifully.
Distillery & Heritage
Amrut Distilleries, founded in 1948 in Bangalore, released India's first single malt in 2004 and changed the global whisky conversation. Made from Indian six-row barley (and, for the peated expressions, imported peated Scottish barley), Amrut matures at roughly 3,000 feet altitude where the angels take a punishing 10-12% share annually.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose builds from sweet smoke through to tropical fruit — mango, pineapple skin — with toasted coconut and dark honey. The palate is enormous: peat reek wraps around chocolate orange and charred oak, while black pepper and clove ride the cask strength heat. The finish is long, smoky, and gently sweet.
Verdict
One of the most compelling peated whiskies outside Scotland. Distinctly Indian, tropical-fruited, and wonderfully confident.
