Tasting Notes

Nose

Bold candied fruits — plum, raisin, fruitcake — molasses, candied orange peel, tropical banana, pineapple, guava, gentle peat smoke with earthiness

Palate

Rich raisin and berry fruit, smoky peated barley threading through the background, citrus orange, caramel, vanilla, baking spices — the Indian and Scottish barley in perfect conversation

Finish

Brown sugar and lingering berries, gentle peatiness fading slowly — the 50% non-chill-filtered delivering warmth without harshness, tropical maturation evident in the intensity

First Impressions

Amrut Fusion — the whisky that rewrote the rulebook. Jim Murray awarded it 97 points in his Whisky Bible 2010, naming it the 3rd best whisky in the world. An Indian single malt competing at the very top of global rankings. 'One of the great whiskies found anywhere in the world this year.'

The Fusion Concept

75% unpeated Indian barley plus 25% Scottish peated barley, matured separately in oak casks, then married in ex-bourbon casks for approximately 3 months. From Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore, established 1948 — India's pioneering single malt distillery. Bangalore's tropical climate accelerates maturation at roughly three times Scotland's rate, producing intense, complex spirit from relatively young stock.

Tasting

Bold candied fruits on the nose with tropical notes and gentle peat smoke. Rich palate of raisin and berry fruit with the peated Scottish barley threading through. The finish delivers brown sugar and berries with slowly fading peat. The 50% non-chill-filtered bottling gives it proper body.

The Verdict

Amrut Fusion earns an 8.5 — a landmark whisky that proved Indian single malt belongs at the world's top table. At £52, it's extraordinary value for a whisky that Jim Murray rated alongside the finest Scotch. The fusion of Indian and Scottish barley creates something genuinely unique. Essential drinking.
