There are few names in Speyside whisky that carry quite the same weight as Aberlour's A'Bunadh range. Batch 57 lands at a formidable 60.7% ABV — cask strength, unfiltered, unapologetic — and it demands your attention from the moment you crack the seal. I've been following this series for years, and while each batch brings its own personality, the core proposition remains the same: sherry-matured Speyside malt at full power, bottled without compromise.

The A'Bunadh line — the name drawn from the Gaelic for 'the original' — has built its reputation on Oloroso sherry cask maturation. No age statement here, which at £150 will raise an eyebrow or two, but the approach has always been about the blender's craft in marrying casks rather than chasing a number on the label. At this ABV, you're getting whisky as close to the barrel as it comes. That matters.

What to Expect

If you've spent any time with cask-strength Speyside malts, you'll know what territory we're in. The A'Bunadh series has long been synonymous with rich, sherry-driven character — dark fruit, baking spice, that unmistakable weight that full-strength spirit delivers on the palate. Batch 57 sits squarely in that tradition. This is not a whisky that whispers. At 60.7%, it arrives with conviction, and the Oloroso influence gives it a density and warmth that lighter Speyside expressions simply cannot match.

The NAS designation means the distillers have had freedom to pull from a range of cask ages, and the result — when it works — is complexity without the premium of a stated age. Whether Batch 57 justifies the £150 asking price will depend on your frame of reference, but I'd argue the quality of sherry cask work here puts it in respectable company at that bracket.

The Verdict

I'm giving Batch 57 an 8.3 out of 10. This is a genuinely satisfying cask-strength single malt that delivers exactly what the A'Bunadh name promises: bold, sherried Speyside with real depth. It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, and that's to its credit. The strength is well-integrated rather than aggressive, and there's enough going on here to reward patience and repeat pours. At £150, it sits at the upper end of what I'd consider fair for a NAS expression, but the cask strength and quality of maturation go some way toward earning that. If you're a fan of the series, Batch 57 won't disappoint. If you're new to A'Bunadh, this is a fine place to start understanding why the range has its following.

Best Served

Neat first — always — to appreciate the full cask strength. Then add water gradually. A few drops will open this up considerably; at 60.7%, it practically invites you to find your own sweet spot. I'd suggest bringing it down to around 46-50% if you want to really let the sherry cask character breathe without the alcohol heat dominating. A classic Speyside like this has no business being anywhere near ice or a mixer. Respect the craft, take your time, and let the whisky do the talking.
