I have been looking forward to getting my hands on Mulholland Distilling American Whiskey. Bottled at 100 proof and priced at $36.99 Artificial cherries, floral vanilla, sherry wine, and banana, it promises genuine character.
Nose
Artificial cherries, floral vanilla, sherry wine, and banana. The nose is extremely sweet, like a dessert. There are no traditional whiskey notes or alcohol esters.
Palate
A slight burn on the tongue gives way to a gentle warming of the chest. There are flavors of artificial cherries and cabernet with a sudden bright burst of riesling. A thin mouthfeel gives way to a dry finish with lingering notes of almond and something chemically.
Finish
Superbly drinkable for cocktail recipes. From the bottle design, to the alcohol content, to the flavor profile, this whiskey is a great bar-buddy. The flavors are sweet and seem tailor-made to be mixed into a whiskey sour, sidecar, or Hollywood Highball. As a neat pour, however, it simply leaves too much on the cutting room floor.
The Bottom Line
Mulholland Distilling American Whiskey is a perfectly respectable whiskey that does what it sets out to do. At $36.99 Artificial cherries, floral vanilla, sherry wine, and banana, the value is reasonable — it will not blow your mind, but it will not disappoint you either. A reliable choice.
