First Impressions
Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye is the BTAC's straight rye expression — uncut, unfiltered, bottled at barrel proof and typically aged around six years.
Distillery & Heritage
Named for Thomas H. Handy, the New Orleans bartender who in 1869 took over the Sazerac Coffee House and is credited as the first to use rye whiskey instead of cognac in the Sazerac cocktail. Part of the Antique Collection since 2006.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is classic high-rye — mint, anise, orange peel and brown sugar over bright spice. The palate is searing without being harsh: clove, cinnamon, dark caramel and black pepper, with dried herbs underneath.
Verdict
The rye benchmark.
