Tasting Notes

Nose

Red fruits, juicy blackberries, dried figs. Sticky malt loaf, nutty grist. The 30-year-old tawny Port pipe adds a rich, wine-derived complexity. Full and inviting.

Palate

Silky caramel, spiced apple compote. Chewy dates and prunes. The 70% rye, 20% wheat, 10% barley mash bill provides grain intensity, and the tawny Port maturation adds a luscious, wine-rich sweetness. At 56% cask strength, magnificent body.

Finish

Peppery rye spice builds, with delicate meadow herbs. The Port pipe influence sustains warmly.

The Tawny Pipe is the first single cask expression of Oxford Rye Whisky — distilled from sustainably farmed heritage grains (70% rye, 20% wheat, 10% barley) and matured in a 30-year-old tawny Port pipe. Limited to 587 bottles at 56% cask strength.

The 30-year-old tawny Port pipe is the centrepiece. Three decades of Port maturation have deeply seasoned the wood, and the heritage rye spirit absorbs this influence richly — red fruit, figs, dates, prunes. The rye's natural peppery spice provides a counterpoint to the Port's luscious sweetness.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery's Tawny Pipe is an impressive single cask English rye. The heritage grain programme, the tawny Port maturation and the cask-strength presentation create something genuinely distinctive. One of England's most ambitious and accomplished whisky releases.
