Macaloney's is one of those names that keeps surfacing in conversations about where Canadian whisky is heading — and Killeigh is a good example of why. This isn't your grandfather's Crown Royal. Bottled at 46% ABV with no age statement and no chill filtration pretensions, it sits in a growing category of Canadian whiskies that want to be taken seriously on their own terms, not as a budget alternative to Scotch or bourbon.

I'll be honest: when Canadian whisky lands on my desk in Edinburgh, I approach it with curiosity rather than expectation. The category has spent decades defined by smooth, light blends designed for mixing. Macaloney's is clearly playing a different game. The 46% ABV is a deliberate choice — it signals confidence in the liquid and a refusal to water things down for mass appeal. At £51.75, it's priced to compete with decent single malts and mid-shelf bourbons, which tells you something about where the distillery sees itself in the market.

What I find interesting about Killeigh is the positioning. This is a NAS release, so we're not being asked to pay for age. We're being asked to pay for craft and character. That's a trade-off I'm increasingly comfortable with, provided the whisky delivers — and at this strength, it has the structure to do so. The Canadian whisky renaissance, if we're calling it that, needs bottles like this: ones that challenge preconceptions without being gimmicky about it.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics here — what I will say is that at 46%, you should expect more weight and texture than the typical 40% Canadian offerings. The higher proof tends to carry more oak influence and spice, and it gives the whisky room to open up with a drop of water if that's your preference. This is a whisky that rewards attention rather than demanding it.

The Verdict

Macaloney's Killeigh earns a 7.5 out of 10 from me, and that score reflects genuine respect for what it's trying to do. It's a Canadian whisky that doesn't apologise for being Canadian, but equally doesn't hide behind the category's easy-drinking reputation. The price point is fair for a craft release at this strength — you're paying more than blended Scotch territory but less than the single malt premiums that can feel arbitrary. If you're the sort of drinker who's been sleeping on Canadian whisky because you associate it with rye-and-gingers at the pub, Killeigh is a good wake-up call. It's not revolutionary, but it's genuinely good, and it represents a category that's moving in the right direction.

Best Served

Pour it neat in a Glencairn and give it five minutes to breathe — the 46% ABV benefits from a little air. If you find it too assertive, a few drops of water will soften the edges without drowning the character. This also works beautifully in an Old Fashioned if you want something with more backbone than a standard Canadian blend — use a good demerara syrup and orange bitters, and let the whisky do the talking.
